Muscular dystrophy

What is Muscular dystrophy?

Muscular dystrophies (MD) are a group of inherited genetic conditions that gradually cause the muscles to weaken.

How can it affect someone?

Muscular dystrophy often begins by affecting a particular group of muscles before going on to affect muscles more widely. Some types of muscular dystrophy eventually affect the heart or the muscles used for breathing, which can be life threatening. There are over 30 types of MD, with varying symptoms, but common problems can include:

  • Difficulties in moving and walking
  • Difficulties swallowing
  • Either general weakening of muscles or weakening of specific muscle groups, with associated problems in using those areas
