Meet Neil Crouch
For our eleventh story, we chatted to Neil, one of our regular guests at Revitalise Jubilee Lodge who has been holidaying with us since 2003!
Born and raised in Harlow, Essex, Neil has always had a keen interest in volunteering and helping others. Starting at the young age of seven, Neil first volunteered with the British Red Cross at their events supporting with First Aid, and carried on until he was 19 years old. Neil also studied Health and Social Care qualifying as an Auxiliary Nurse and went on to work in this role at the Herts and Essex Community Hospital for about three years, but had to stop work when he became ill.
Despite not being able to continue with full-time work, this did not stop Neil from taking on a number of other voluntary roles in his community. From running a social club for disabled people in Harlow and Chelmsford called Mike’s Den, to running his own Spiritualist Church at the Great Parndon Community Association, there is never a dull moment for Neil! And during these roles Neil also spent a year working on an appeal to provide orphaned children in Romania with wheelchairs, to give them the opportunity to explore their local community just as anyone else should.
When Neil can find the time outside of all of his commitments, he enjoys going out, especially to the theatre. But Neil enjoys these things the most when he is on holiday at Jubilee Lodge because there is always so much for him to do!
“I have made a really good group of friends at Revitalise and I meet other like-minded people. It’s good because we usually organise it so that we go to Revitalise around the same time to enjoy our holidays together. Going on holiday means that I enjoy a break away from my carers, and they have the opportunity to take a break from their caring role too, because they need it. ”
The biggest impact a Revitalise break has on Neil is that he is given the chance to recharge his batteries. When asked to sum up what Revitalise means to Neil he said:
“It’s just excellent. What they offer is fantastic and the staff are wonderful. If you ever need anything they are straight there, and I love how unique Revitalise is because you get the care on your holiday too.”
Neil told us that one of his favourite memories was from indoor skydiving with us,
“That was brilliant… I have so many laughs when I’m away, and my friends and I have had such good times. Of an evening we play cards, joke with each other and have a drink, there’s lots of that.”
Neil is now looking forward to spending Christmas with his family, heading off this Christmas Eve to make the most of the festive period!
