One of the most popular and fastest-growing cities in the UK, Leeds, has swiftly become something of a tourism hot spot, attracting more annual visitors than traditional holiday destinations like Brighton and Torquay. With such an array of interesting activities on offer, it is easy to see why this rival ‘Capital of the North’ is making such waves.

For one thing, Leeds boasts a thriving arts and culture scene, with famous galleries like Leeds Art Gallery and The Henry Moore Institute, home to one of the strongest British sculpture collections in the world. Be sure to also take in Leeds City Museum, with fascinating exhibits ranging from Egyptian mummies to Greek pottery. Once deemed the biggest room in the world, former flax mill Temple Works now serves as a cultural hub, perhaps equally well-known for an historical oddity – sheep used to graze on its grass covered roof.

With 3.5 million square feet of retail floor space, as well as one of the UK’s largest pedestrianised shopping areas, there are also few better cities in which to enjoy some retail therapy. Along its five miles of shopping streets, featuring oodles of designer, high street and independent stores alike, Leeds is teaming with bargains to be found. The Victorian quarter of the high streets’ historic arcades, featuring gorgeous mosaics and stained glass windows, brings an unexpected flair of architectural dazzle, placing Leeds a healthy step above the average shopping district.

If you find yourself in the mood for some fresh air and a wander, Leeds is also renowned for being one of the greenest cities in Europe: over two-thirds of its total area comprise of greenbelt land. There are numerous gardens and parks to explore, including the 700-acre Roundhay Park, and Temple Newsam – a Tudor-Jacobean house boosted by its delightful English landscape garden.
