Queen Elizabeth II And Her Platinum Jubilee Celebrations

Hello Readers! My name is Toni-Marie. I will tell you just a little bit about my disability as I feel it is relevant. I have cerebral palsy quadriplegia and scoliosis of the spine. This means I am a full-time electric wheelchair user.

Thank You, Your Majesty!

The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II took place at Westminster Abbey on the 2nd of June 1953. It was the first-ever one to be televised. I remember my grandparents saying that everyone descended upon the neighbour’s houses as they had a television. The Queen’s Coronation dress was designed by British fashion designer Norman Hartnell. It was made of satin and embroidered with the emblems of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth in gold and silver thread. It just looked so stunningly beautiful! It must have been so exciting to be able to watch it on a black-and-white TV! I don’t think that it could show the Coronation dress off to its truest beauty! And indeed the sheer splendour of the whole event itself!

So Young And Yet Absolutely Committed To Serve

Queen Elizabeth II was twenty-five years old when she succeeded to the Throne. She was in Kenya at the time on a Tour of Duty in place of her Father. She was betrothed to the Sovereign after her beloved father King George The VI passed away. Having seen footage of the Coronation over the years, I can’t even begin to imagine how The Queen must have felt being so young herself – and never, ever expecting to find herself with the title of Her Majesty. However, She is the longest-serving monarch in British history and is a much respected and loved figure around the world.

At twenty-five, she gave such an empowering speech at her Coronation talking about her intention to serve, dedicate and unify her people. The Queen is a Monarch of fourteen Commonwealth countries in total including the United Kingdom. The list of her duties is quite simply exhausting! And yet she has always carried herself with dignity, grace and honour.

Her Guiding Light – Her Family

I believe there is one man in particular who was her guiding light through her most difficult times, public or otherwise. And that was of course her late husband Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh. In his roles as Consort and husband to Queen Elizabeth II, I truly believe that he was her one source of unconditional support, encouragement, calm and trust.

I think that as a nation we need to remember that along with being our Queen she is also a mother, a sister, a grandmother and a great-grandmother. It is all too easy for people to draw the wrong conclusions about how life is for a royal based purely on how they feel about the Queen as a person rather than do what is fair and base their opinion on a validated fact. Irrespective of one’s personal views, the Queen has done a sterling job of leading this country and the world! It is up to us as people to ensure that we strive to be the United Kingdom. And right now there is never a more appropriate time to be reminded of this than when celebrating the Queens Platinum Jubilee.

There is an exciting list of events to celebrate this momentous occasion including Trooping The Colour, exhibitions, garden parties, private events, street parties, concerts and an extended Bank Holiday! So do your research and be a part of this amazing time in history in honour of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. I think that a very British problem is that of procrastination. So glam up your wheels and put on your Dancin’ shoes – we have seventy years of Her Majesty’s incredible service to celebrate!
